It took 1.5 years and countless follow-up emails and calls on my part. They were rebuilding my 1970 VW bus engine and gearbox – a simple 1600 single carb – one of the simplest engines in the world. This work cost me 5 figures (in Euros) and the result is now an unhappy engine that leaks oil. My original Solex carb was exchanged for a below standard aftermarket part that makes the engine splutter and choke. After the first year of waiting (with the bus sitting outside in the elements the whole time) I was offered the chance to collect the bus. But there was a serious problem with the gearbox. Neither second nor fourth gear would hold. I was under the illusion that by leaving my bus with here, I would get a beautifully reconditioned engine that would tick over like a Swiss clock, so it was worth waiting for. But I was wrong. I lost all this time waiting, and for a poor result. As has been confirmed by other old timer enthusiasts in the country, they are good at shows (events, a strong social media presence, even a zappy dress code…), but their business practice is not up to par. The mechanics just don’t seem to have the flair or the specialisation. Or perhaps they just lack interest. I don’t know. Yet they charge for endless hours and appear to railroad the customer into accepting ever-increasing estimates while the vehicle is dismantled, and the customer is helpless. The company was founded in 1918 by an inspirational man. Three generations on, the business is now run by what appear to be amateurs hanging on to the name. However, the business continues to attract financially comfortable customers, still happy to sign cheques for their precious old-timers. Makes me wonder. Finally, the bus was “ready”. In fact, I paid the bill just to get my bus out of there. Sorry but this repair shop is not for me. Thank you.
