29 JANV. 2019 | PROPOSED BY OUR PARTNER ING LUXEMBOURG
You are ready for your move. You have everything well prepared and have mastered your budget . The hardest is behind you! All you have to do is go through some steps. Here is an overview of everything you have to do before and after you have settled down for good in your new home.
The steps before your move
Before arriving in your new home, make sure that all subscriptions and supply agreements have been terminated or transferred on the date of the move. Notify your gas, electricity, TV reception and your fixed line, Internet and mobile telephony providers in a timely manner. Also plan to have your meters read on the last day before your departure (water, gas and electricity) 1 .
In Luxembourg, any change of gas and electricity supplier is done free of charge and without any intervention at the facility level. To compare the different offers available on the market according to your new place of residence, you can consult the online price comparison made available by the Luxembourg Institute of Regulation (ILR).
For a telephone and internet connection request, first contact Post Luxembourg, the national telecommunications manager. This approach will open the line. Once registered, you have the free choice of the operator. For the water supply, the point of contact is the municipal administration.
If you have a toddler, consider enrolling in the different childcare facilities as soon as possible. Places are limited and waiting lists are long. If you are moving in the middle of the school year and your child is in primary school, contact the schooling department of your new municipality of residence as soon as possible to make a change of school. If your child is in high school, he is not obliged to change schools. Wait rather the end of the year before changing possibly high school unless the distance between the old and the new residence is much too big!
The steps after the move
Contact the municipality first. If you move within the Grand Duchy, you are required to report to the new municipality within 8 days of occupying your new residence. If you are a national of the European Union or an assimilated country, you must also provide a certificate of registration. If you are a national of a third country, you must accompany your declaration with a residence permit, a residence permit or a visa.
If you move from abroad to Luxembourg, are a national of a European Union country or an assimilated country and plan to stay more than 3 months in Luxembourg, you must declare your arrival at your place of residence, with your identity card (or your valid passport). If you are a national of a third country, you must declare your arrival with your municipality of stay within 3 days of your entry in the territory, whatever the length of the envisaged stay. If you stay less than 3 months, you must go to the municipality with a valid travel document accompanied, if necessary, by a visa. If your stay exceeds 3 months, you must present a residence permit obtained before entering the territory as well as a valid passport (accompanied, if applicable, by a visa) or a title of stay issued by another Member State of the Schengen Area 2 .
Other steps with your new municipality may be necessary: the renewal of the identity card if you are Luxembourgish, the residential parking sticker if you own a car, the declaration of your dog if you have one and the registration on the electoral lists if you are non-Luxembourgish and were not already registered in your previous commune. If you move into a particular house, you can ask for your different garbage sorting bins from the health service of your municipality.
In addition to your bank, friends, family or mutual, do not forget to notify your employer . This is important, not only for correspondence, but also for calculating your commuting allowance and allowing you to benefit from the two days of extraordinary leave for moving.
