How to make a kitchen island?

How to make a central island in your kitchen

Practical, functional and trendy, the kitchen island is a major asset in every home. Follow our handy guide to make your own kitchen island by using recycled parts. A few tools, a little painting and a bit of imagination are enough!

Build an original island from items you have at home

There is no need to hire an architect or spend a fortune on create your own modern and functional storage cabinet. Just use four simple objects: locker shelves, desk, chest of drawers or kitchen items.

A few screws and good tools, and voila! Take two shelves with the same size, the height of which is ideally equivalent to that of a table. Put them back to back. Then get a chipboard whose surface matches that of the two assembled lockers. Secure the assembly with screws. Finished ! The realized island even has a storage space under the worktop, allowing you to fit all your kitchen instruments. Finally, you can paint it in your favorite shade.

Another tip: add hooks on the sides to hang utensils. An office or table can also be used as a support to make your furniture. You can build the table yourself using wooden planks. Remember to place a laminate board on the top of the furniture to cook without damaging it.

The dresser is another alternative. If it is too low, install casters underneath. Practice, you could move the island at your leisure. A great option if you have little room in your kitchen.

Last solution: forming blocks from kitchen elements or furniture. Combine the different blocks to form an island of optimal size, then attach a work plan after assembling them.

The choice of pieces will be based on the style you want to give your island. If you opt for something modern and elegant, dare the alliance between the wooden planks and the marble worktop. Bet on originality and give a second wind to a used door by using it as a worktop. A very economical solution that respects the environment!

Another very cheap solution: the island made from painted pallets. Assemble several pallets until you reach the desired height. Secure them with wood glue. In the space gained between the pallets you will be able to store your bottles of wine, for example.

Creative ideas to give style to your new kitchen furniture

Now you have the possibility to add all the aesthetic details and practical elements that you want to your island: hooks, an aluminum paper dispenser, baskets to store fruits and vegetables ... Let your imagination speak!

You would be wrong to believe that a kitchen island is only suitable for large rooms. Optimize space by creating shelves under the worktop. You have to suspend objects? A few hooks under the worktop will allow you to fix stoves, pots and other kitchen utensils. Your island becomes multifunctional!

The last step is to personalize it. The possibilities are many depending on the style you want to give to your kitchen.

To add a touch of dynamism, paint your island in bright colors. Make a color reminder by taking inspiration from the elements that decorate your kitchen: a vase, statuettes ... By choosing dark colors for the bottom of the furniture and a rather dark shade for the worktop you would have a more rustic result.

Another option: use antique furniture as a base. To garnish your vintage kitchen island, opt for the woven baskets. These practical storage spaces will combine perfectly with the style of your new furniture. For a more design look, do not hesitate to customize your island. For example, on a white piece of furniture, make oblique black bands on parts of it.

Finally create harmony in your kitchen by customizing other furniture in the same way.
