Tips to protect your plants from freezing

          protéger ses plantes du gel

That's it, the polar temperatures are coming! In the garden, it is important to protect plants from frost and cold. But how to take care of them, to find them more beautiful than ever in the spring? We tell you everything!

Logically, the plants in the garden should have been protected before the first frosts . If you are a late-comer, do not waste time and save what can still be.

          Plants in the ground

The plants in the ground bloom every year and need to be protected from the cold, because many are fragile. Their feet should be covered with 5 centimeters of dried leaves or straw . To prevent everything from flying away, consider putting a weight on each pile.

The shrubs, so that their antlers are protected, can be packed in a wintering veil (protective cloth).

          Potted plants

This type of plant should be protected from cold and wind. Potted plants may be stored in a location where temperatures will not be below 5 degrees (shed, garage, etc.). If you do not have a suitable place, you can use a reed mat to surround the pots and pans in which the plants are.

          The rosebushes

Protecting the roses in your garden is not imperative because they are rather resistant to cold. But to avoid any unpleasant surprises, you can cover their feet with fine and light soil . Form what is called a hillock, from a height of 15 to 20 centimeters.

          Small isolated plants

Lost in the middle of a lawn, these plants are strongly exposed to bad weather conditions. To protect them, use a clay pot filled with straw, or a plastic bottle : returned, they can thus serve as protection bells.

          Mediterranean plants

On palms, olive trees and citrus fruits, lay a wintering veil, especially if they are grown in pots. If you have room in a cool and airy place (garage, cellar, etc.), you can also shelter them. However, make sure they have some daylight .

          Other dangers for your garden

Large amounts of snow can , by its weight, break some of your plantations, and even branches of trees. However, it has an advantage since it protects the roots of the gel.

The wind , which dries the earth severely, can cause damage to shrubs and perennials if it is freezing. In case of strong gusts, the branches of the plants and trees are subjected to severe test.
