


COVID-19 affects more and more sections of society. This extremely contagious disease thus requires a certain number of precautions to be taken.
The Luxembourg government has therefore taken measures accordingly concerning the population but also businesses.
Avoiding the spread of the virus is essential ( our advice to stop transmission )!
For this, the Luxembourg government has opted for rules of distance in interpersonal relationships. Containment is now necessary to limit this spread. Also, traffic is now very reduced. You can only travel to health facilities, for food and pharmaceutical purchases, in certain play areas and in exceptional circumstances.
With this in mind, it is important to encourage telework as much as possible, especially among vulnerable people. It also means reducing business activity to essential tasks. Frontier workers are therefore invited to stay at home. Please note, the police are on watch and a serious reason must be available for driving without the risk of a fine.
In very concrete terms, this means that the vast majority of businesses will have to close their doors to potential consumers or customers. Any breach will also be sanctioned by a high fine, the amount of which may reach 4,000 euros for businesses that do not comply with this prohibition on opening.
All commercial and craft activities that welcome an audience must remain closed. This closure does not affect food stores as well as petrol pumps ( our article on gas stations ), pharmacies, funeral services or financial institutions.
In the event of a decline in the activity of your company, several partial unemployment schemes exist. For example, partial unemployment due to force majeure is a preferred option by the government. Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, recalled in his last speech being aware of the sacrifices required from companies, but made it clear that these were imperatives linked to public health.
The Luxembourg Ministry of Economy has also set up a hotline dedicated to short-time working. It is 8002 9191.
The government has also created a specific FAQ to answer all the questions that business leaders may ask themselves.
These various measures came into force on March 16, 2020. Everyone is therefore expected to be fully aware of the rules currently in force on Luxembourg territory.
