The benevolent management teaches the argumentative and constructive returns, but also the daily expression of gratitude towards the employees. For managers, the method calls for putting in place measures designed to improve the comfort of employees, such as better management of schedules or the creation of a more user-friendly workspace.
Exacerbated competitiveness: Cartesian management
In contrast, Cartesian management puts the well-being of employees aside for the benefit of singular performances. It starts from the premise that a competitive atmosphere is an excellent lever for the growth of a company. It is indeed proven that we all have the desire in us to surpass ourselves by crossing the obstacles that stand in our way.
Based on this psychological characteristic, Cartesian management requires managers to set up performance measurement tools, with clear-cut tasks and regular monitoring. The latter will nevertheless have to be very vigilant not to establish a work environment that would turn the hostile clearly putting employees in direct competition.
An abolition of hierarchical structures: collaborative management
With a growing number of supporters, collaborative management simply calls for the maximum abolition of the different hierarchical levels of a company and the pure and simple destruction of the profession of manager. Freed from the red tape and submission to a line manager, employees would gain motivation and tend to innovate further.
The perfect example of the implementation of this methodology is the video game developer Valve, an American company created in 1996 that rejected any form of hierarchy. A brochure given to newcomers indicates that no one is at the helm of society, not even its founders! For the record, Valve announces to date a market capitalization of 30 billion dollars ...
