That's it, it's time ! You feel ready to expand your family to welcome a new member. If you have considered the purchase or adoption of a dog, it is better not to rush and make your choice taking into account all the formalities that await you. From the microchip to its registration at the commune, your four-legged companion must be in good standing on all levels.
The vaccine
Your dog will have to be vaccinated , in particular against rabies, by a veterinarian who will be responsible for recording in a document all the information enabling the animal to be identified.
This step is essential to check that your dog does not carry germs that could make him sick or contaminate his fellow animals.
The microchip
It is mandatory and must be put in place within four months after the birth of the animal, or " within one month after its acquisition or importation ", according to the platform Public window .
The interest is double : if your pet goes astray, you will find it more easily , but it will also allow you to identify it if an incident arises and jeopardizes your responsibility.
Liability insurance
Like you, your dog is likely to cause harm or an accident .
Insuring your dog limits the risks and speeds up the repair of damage.
Identification at the commune
You must present your dog to the services of the municipality concerned in order to register it. When you come, remember to bring a proof that proves that your animal is insured. The declaration that you will obtain from your municipality of residence will have to be updated if, subsequently, you move.
What if your dog comes from abroad ? He must also be in good standing under the law: carry a microchip, have vaccines up-to-date and be regularized at the level of his European papers.
The annual tax
The acquisition of a dog also assumes certain costs . Among them, the annual fee, a sum of money (minimum € 10) you must pay. Check with the administrative services of your municipality to know its exact amount.
It should be noted, however, that guide and assistance dogs are exempt from the payment of this tax.
Keeping on a leash
Your dog must be kept on a leash in public places in agglomerations. Exceptions exist however, some municipalities being more flexible.
Unless restricted, you can leave your pet free outside the city , except if the streets are busy.
The case of dangerous dogs
Dangerous dogs can be a hindrance, especially given the controls that certain breeds are subject to.
For example, the future owner of a "dangerous" dog will have to take compulsory courses delivered by a licensed veterinarian. He must also be of age and never have been convicted, among other special provisions.
Frame to protect
All these regulations should not in any way prevent you from making the happiness of your beast naked! On the contrary, they are useful for you to be fully protected , you as the owner, but also your dog.
Note that if something happens to your pet, you will automatically report it to the administration of your municipality .
Finally, if you are a renter , be sure to check that your landlord accepts pets before bringing your new pet home.
