Building the Outernet: a highly secure global space network

Rivada Space Networks is developing the Outernet, an exceptionally secure and robust orbital network designed to provide ultra-fast point-to-point connectivity on a global scale.

The Outernet will act as a powerful optical backbone in space. It will be capable of transmitting gigabits of data per second with fiber-optic–like efficiency. Operating independently of the Internet and terrestrial gateways. It will thus be granting enterprises and governments unmatched data –sovereignty in space, along with highly secure and dependable connectivity solutions anywhere on the globe.

The upcoming constellation will consist of 600 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO): 25 satellites in 24 polar orbit planes at an altitude of 1050 kilometres. The satellites will employ cutting-edge data routers and will be linked through 2,400 laser links. This pioneering terabit mesh architecture positions the Outernet as the first and only gateway-less LEO architecture. It aims to serve fast-growing data and mobility markets around the globe, including sectors such as telecommunications, enterprise, and government.

Rivada Space Networks was founded in 2022 by Declan Ganley, Chairman and CEO of Rivada Networks in the U.S. While Rivada Networks focusses on terrestrial connectivity, Rivada Space Networks adds the satellite part to the business model and anchors it in Europe, with headquarters in Munich, Germany, and a secondary office in the country’s capital, Berlin.

waveL began its collaboration with Rivada in November 2022, providing ongoing support in formulating and developing its strategy, profile and story. waveL assists in crafting storybooks, corporate and commercial messages, while also initiating and orchestrating outreach efforts to global media. Utilising its extensive network and connections across various languages and continents – including Europe, the U.S., the Middle East and Asia – waveL helps develop, launch and drive impactful corporate and marketing campaigns.

With its team based in Luxembourg, France, Portugal and Singapore, waveL supports Rivada’s on-ground efforts at tradeshows and trade events around the world. waveL is dedicated to guiding this ambitious and rapidly expanding New Space start- and scale-up through the different phases of its development, facilitating the intense dialogue with policy makers and both public and private stakeholders, and aiding in the pursuit of new investors and clients across the dynamic and buoyant business sectors and markets that Rivada targets.

Rivada Space Networks works with a growing international team of skilled experts and engineers who have spent their careers expanding the boundaries and potential of space. This diverse group is now united in pursuit of its single goal: the development of the Outernet. The company has placed an initial order for 300 satellites and has successfully obtained customer commitments and memoranda of understanding across various sectors and regions resulting in a total commercial backlog exceeding 13 billion Euros.
